There are probably a trillion articles out there on why resolutions don’t work or tips for keeping them or the best kind to make blahblahblah. I’m not here to talk about any of that. I’m obviously someone who isn’t very good at keeping them because I’m not the type of person who is going to suddenly change just because the year has. And I’d assume most people are like this. If I want a change in my life, I’ll make it happen when the time is right.
When I graduated college and finally realized just how much the drinking and late night eating of senior year had packed on the pounds, I took the routine of a 9-to-5 job as an opportunity to start eating better and working out more. I didn’t need to wait for the New Year for that. And since making that simple change, I’ve lost about 15 lbs. while still eating pretty much everything I want. If you don’t believe me, just take a peak at my Foodspotting or Instagram pages.
So when 2013 came and everyone started posting the typical statuses about eating better and the gym suddenly got crowded, I mostly just laughed to myself because I know that for the majority of those people, it’s just NOT going to work out. Especially for those of us living in NYC, there are just tooo many temptations that steer us in the opposite direction of these resolutions.
So here’s my thought on the whole thing and the essential purpose of this blog:
Life is all about balance.
This applies to everything from the critical work vs. life to relationships and in the case of this blog, to food. Because here’s the truth, Ruth: do I want a supermodel body? Of course! Who doesn’t? But will I forcefully deprive myself of all of my favorite foods to get it? HELL NO. I know plenty of people who are perfectly capable of doing so and completely fine having grilled chicken and steamed broccoli for the rest of their life to get the body of their dreams. I on the other hand am absolutely content with my body as is, so long as I still get to enjoy life’s many pleasures while maintaining a size small. Can my body be better; can I be skinnier/more toned? Of course, and that’s why I live a balanced lifestyle of eating super healthy food along with the super fatty food while working out as much as I can.
Which takes me back to this blog. I realized that the reason why I was unable to keep a constant stream of posts was because I usually don’t have the time to write out lengthy posts and reviews. On the other hand, I am quite capable of writing up short bits on what I think about the food I eat or a workout I just had. So from now on, that’s exactly what you will see here. I’ll primarily focus on writing what I’m going to call the very self-explanatory series “Is it worth the calories?” to give you my perspective on just how bad you should feel about yourself after eating a slice of Artichoke pizza [preview: in most cases, you shouldn’t :)]. I’ll also continue writing about the ways I try to eat healthy, workouts and races/mud runs I enter to stay fit, and any other general food-related posts.
So as per my tagline, here’s to having your cake and working it off later! I hope you follow my adventures in leading my bipolar lifestyle – any feedback would be awesome and I’d love it if you could share with friends. Expect an update soon!
