Ooooooh she thicc. That’s the first thought you’ll have over these almost 4 cm thick atsuyaki thick-fried pancakes from Yukinoshita Hong Kong, an award-winning Japanese dessert shop with locations in Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo. It’s the first of its kind in Hong Kong, specializing in crispy edged, dense yet fluffy pancakes rather than the jiggly souffle pancakes that are all the Instagram-rage. By focusing on only a few dishes with high quality ingredients (like farm-fresh eggs from Hiroshima and mandarin honey from Ehime), Yukinoshita is able to distinguish itself from its competition. That said, it is located on the same street in Causeway Bay as a number of other Japanese dessert shops, so you can watch the full video below to see us make our way through that street.
The original pancake is particularly satisfying, with a wonderful egg-forward flavor complemented by a pat of butter and the aforementioned mandarin honey. The matcha version somewhat loses the fluffy texture, with a matcha-heavy flavor that is saved by the luscious fresh whipped cream and Azuki beans – you’re better off with the original unless you’re a matcha lover. Even as someone who loves drinking unsweetened matcha, the kakigori is too matcha-heavy while lacking the sweetness desired in a dessert, making you wish you went across the street to Shari Shari instead.
