I am absolutely obsessed with my cute and clingy goldendoodle named Crosby, so I’ve spent the last 7 years finding as many ways to bring my dog with me all around Hong Kong.
While many parts of the city sadly do not allow dogs (including most of the public parks and beaches ๐ฅฒ), there are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants and cafes in Hong Kong, some of which are incredibly welcoming so your dog can even sit indoors with you. In other cases, they at least have an outdoor area for you and your pup. So here is a guide to some of my favorite restaurants and cafes to enjoy with your furry friends.
Important to note that this list skews toward the SoHo/Sheung Wan area since it’s walking distance from my apartment, but I have plenty of spots in Kowloon and Outlying Islands in this list too. So keep reading for my favorite dog-friendly spots.
Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants in Hong Kong
Barkada
Barkada is a modern Filipino restaurant and bar in Central with a dog-friendly semi-outdoor terrace and bar, and it happens to be owned by yours truly alongside Singular Concepts. If the restaurant isn’t too busy and your dog is small enough, they can even sit in the seat next to you while you enjoy our menu of crave-able bar snacks and comforting Filipino dishes. We provide water bowls and treats from Buddy Bites for all the pups while you dine with us.
We also host the occasional BARKada Block Pawty on a Sunday afternoon where dogs are allowed inside the restaurant. Stay tuned on Barkada’s Instagram as we have a holiday pawty coming in December! ๐ ๐ป
Cookie DPT
Directly below Barkada is our favorite American-inspired cafe, serving up thick gooey cookies with classic and Asian flavors, satisfying breakfast burritos and biscuit sandwiches, New York style bagels (ask for extra cream cheese), and bacon and egg plates with the fluffy pancakes and crispy hash browns. Dogs are allowed in Cookie DPT’s compact outdoor area and indoor dining room, with first come-first serve seating for their cafe-style low-top tables.
Fini’s SoHo and Wan Chai
Our go-to New York Italian restaurant has locations in SoHo and Wan Chai with a few semi-outdoor tables that allow dogs, so you can enjoy giant pizzas, excellent vodka pasta, and other Italian-American favorites with your pup. Be sure to call ahead for a table.
You can also dine with your dog at their sister restaurant Frank’s, but only at the small tables directly next to their wide street-facing door so call ahead.
Honky Tonks Tavern
We love frequenting this American-styled bar that serves up fried chicken tenders, pizza and cocktails, as dogs are allowed inside the entire bar and dining room with wooden booths, as well outside throughout the expansive public sitting area.
Sip Song
Our favorite place to dine in Repulse Bay is Sip Song for their bold Thai dishes in a colorful dining room that brings us back to Phuket. They even have a dog food menu for your pup to eat human-grade food while you dig into their consistent menu of crowd-pleasers like an excellent roti, duck curry, scotch egg, “strip club” chicken and noodle dishes. It’s the perfect reward after a Violet Hill to Repulse Bay hike.
If you’re at Repulse Bay and don’t want Thai food, or if the wait for one of their few outdoor tables is too long, you can try Limewood, Amalfitana, Soho Banh Mi, or Classified, which all have outdoor-adjacent tables and generally delicious food.
Shek O Thai
This no-frills local Thai restaurant is pretty much the only place I eat after a beach day at Shek O or a hike to Dragon’s Back, with ample outdoor tables so your dog can join you. Check out my Shek O guide for everything you should order.
Stazione Novella / Peak Pizza
The best spot for apertivo with your dog, as this cozy Florence-inspired cafe and wine bar puts out a delicious spread of meats, cheeses, crostini and more that’s all complimentary with the purchase of a drink during their daily happy hour. [UPDATE: For the month of December, Peak Pizza has taken over the space so instead of apertivo, they are serving up awesome New York style slices for just HK$28-38. Their apertivo offer is only on Mondays, where you can get unlimited slices with the purchase of a drink.]
Hooman by the Sea in West Kowloon
West Kowloon is one of the most dog-friendly places in Hong Kong, with sprawling green yards and gorgeous views. Hooman by the Sea leans into their prime West Kowloon location with their menu of hot dogs named after different dog breeds, plus fried snacks and churro ice cream sundaes.
The Farmhouse at Hyatt Centric Hotel
It’s only fitting that one of the most dog-friendly hotels in Hong Kong also boasts a buffet that allows dogs too! You can take turns going inside to The Farmhouse’s extensive buffet while your dog hangs out in their expansive outdoor patio with harbourfront views. They even have a dog dim sum cart for you to add-on dim sum-shaped dog treats.
Rajasthan Rifles at Victoria Peak
Our favorite spot for a relaxed meal after hiking to Victoria Peak is Rajasthan Rifles. They serve satisfying British-Indian fare like curries with fluffy naan, a pricey but delish chicken tikka club sandwich, and a must-order lamb keema pau on their spacious patio overlooking the view. They will also give your dog biscuits from Butter bake shop while you dine.
Ding’s Roasted Goose at Victoria Peak
If we want to sit down to char siu, roast goose and dim sum at the Peak, we head to Ding’s. While everything at the Peak is a bit overpriced for what it is, the food here is generally pretty good, and they have a dog-friendly outdoor patio. If the restaurant isn’t busy and the right manager is working, they will even allow you to sit indoors with your dog.
Otherwise I will get my char siu fix from Men Wah Bing Teng 1 floor above Ding’s, where they serve the food takeaway to eat on their outdoor patio.
Mamtom in Tsim Sha Tsui
This Southeast Asian beer garden just behind the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade serves my favorite pho in the entire city, which you can enjoy at Mamtom’s massive dog-friendly outdoor patio. Dig into Chef John Nguyen’s flavor-loaded and highly instagrammable Vietnamese and Thai dishes, including an insanely good duck khao soi, hearty pho with bone marrow, and grilled items.
Fiata Pizza
The best pizzeria in Hong Kong has a small outdoor area with a couple of 2 person tables and a 4 seat bar counter so you can bring your dog along while enjoying Fiata’s award-winning fluffy, cloud-like crusts with signature topping combinations. The Al’Salsiccia with sausage and Bronte with mortadella are my favorites.
La Camionetta
My favorite spot for crispy Italian pizzas in SoHo allows dogs throughout their compact dining area plus a couple of outdoor tables. All of the pizzas at La Camionetta are excellent, though my favorites include the diavola and camburrata, plus the salads are anything but boring, bursting with Italian flavors.
Mo Bros
Hidden down a staircase off Soho’s Elgin Street is what I like to call Hong Kong’s Olive Garden, with hearty, garlic-loaded Italian-American dishes. Mo Bros has a basic enclosed outdoor patio with several tables to sit down with your dog. We always order the fried whitebait, fettucine alfredo, and cheesy baked mostacioli pasta with Italian sausage.
Shake Shack at IFC Mall
While most of IFC Mall does not allow dogs, the ground floor and the 4th floor rooftop area with tables directly outside of Shake Shack are dog-friendly public grounds. Because of this, I will walk on the ground floor to an elevator and take it up to the 4th floor, then hurry across to Shake Shack before a guard yells at me since the rest of the 4th floor rooftop does not allow dogs ๐ Worth the momentary rule-breaking to be able to enjoy Shack Burgers, Chick’n Bites and shakes with your pup, and Shake Shack even sells a Pooch-ini and biscuits so you can treat your dog too.
Sunset Pier
My favorite not-so-hidden gem for Thai food with a view is located on the top of Central Ferry Pier 3. While it’s commonly known as Beer Bay or Disco Bay since it’s the after party spot for many a boozy boat party, Sunset Pier’s restaurant area with patio seating actually serves yummy Thai dishes so you can have a nice meal here with your dog. I always get the juicy pandan leaf-wrapped chicken with green curry.
Chullschick in Wan Chai
While the SoHo location of my favorite Peruvian roast chicken spot is entirely indoors, the Wan Chai branch of Chullschick boasts an outdoor area that allows dogs. Besides the juicy and flavorful roast chicken, you don’t want to miss their ceviches, cheesy empanadas, smoked pork sandwich, and signature smoked duck with a cilantro-infused green rice.
Cheung Sing Restaurant in Tai Hang
This local cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style diner) in Tai Hang was actually featured on Nicole Kidman’s Expats TV Show, but it’s way more well-known for serving the community and many taxi drivers with simple but satisfying rice and noodle dishes. They have plastic stools and a counter that wraps along the outside of the restaurant, plus a couple of tiny tables so you can bring your dog while you enjoy pork chop or chicken with soy sauce and fried egg over rice.
Bogu Pets Grooming & Coffee in Tai Hang
With dog grooming on one side and a cafe on the other, Bogu is easily the most pet-friendly shop in the hip Tai Hang neighborhood next to Causeway Bay. While I haven’t tried their menu of western brunch fare, they do have yummy dog-shaped macarons and even stamp their lattes with a paw print.
Schragel’s Delicatessen in Sheung Wan
Our go-to New York style delicatessen serves up our favorite Reuben sandwiches plus decent bagels and other breakfast fare. Dogs are allowed indoors throughout Schragel’s compact corner space.
The Brew Corner in Sheung Wan
For coffee and bagel sandwiches with some Asian flair, check out The Brew Corner on Sheung Wan’s quiet Square Street just behind Man Mo Temple. You can get squishy, chewy pretzel bagels stuffed with combinations like char siu or corned beef with scrambled eggs, or go western with chicken and avocado as a bagel sandwich or protein-loaded wrap.
Fineprint in SoHo
You’re always bound to see some dogs roaming around on SoHo’s Peel Street, especially in the mornings when plenty of dog owners head to Fineprint for coffee and sourdough toasts.
Best Dog-Friendly Restaurants in New Territories & Outlying Islands
The easiest way to guarantee a good meal that you can enjoy with your dog by your side is to get out of the city, as generally every local seafood spot or beachside restaurant with outdoor seating is dog-friendly. Here are some of my favorites that just require a taxi ride or hop onto a dog-friendly standard ferry.
Dim Sum World at The Mills
Dog-friendly dim sumโneed I say more? While a trip out to Tsuen Wan is a trek from Hong Kong Island, The Mills is one of the most dog-friendly malls in Hong Kong and has a good amount to see and explore, perfect for a rainy day adventure with your dog. We especially enjoyed Dim Sum World’s char siu pineapple buns, plump siu mai, steamed fish maw with chicken, and garlicky steamed fish over rice.
Genuine Lamma Hilton Fishing Village Restaurant
My favorite local seafood restaurant on Lamma Island has a long pier for waterfront dining. Genuine Lamma Hilton serves up fresh and affordable items like razor clams and scallops with garlic and vermicelli, salt and pepper squid, sweet and sour pork, and all your classic Cantonese seafood dishes. Plus you can do the Lamma Island Family Walk after to enjoy the outdoors.
Lamma Rainbow Seafood & Mango King
If you have a really big group, you might be better off at Lamma Island’s Rainbow Seafood, which has a much larger outdoor patio though generally higher prices. Regardless of where you go for seafood, be sure to pick up a mango mochi from Mango King just past Rainbow Seafood.
Bathers and Lantau Diner at Cheung Sha Beach
While all of the restaurants at Lantau Island’s picturesque Cheung Sha Beach are dog-friendly, my favorites are Bathers and Lantau Diner. Bathers has comfortable seating with always solid (though mildly overpriced) western fare and seafood plates. Lantau Diner needs to be booked ahead of time for their stellar beachside BBQ packages served on huge wooden planks, starting at HK$250 per headโperfect for celebrating with a group. Just WhatsApp Frankie at 9369 6627 to book.
Cheung Chau Street Food & New Baccarat Seafood
Cheung Chau Island is one of my favorite day trips for a beach day filled with street food and seafood, accessible with your dog by a 55-60 minute ride on the ordinary ferry. Grab giant curry fish balls, mango mochi and frozen watermelon at the street food stalls a block from the ferry pier, then spend the day at the dog-friendly Kwun Yam Beach, where you can get simple fried fish sandwiches or book a Hong Kong-style BBQ experience at Hing Kee Beach Store. Then finish the day with a seafood feast at New Baccarat.
Sai Kung Seafood Street & Beaches
All of the restaurants around the Sai Kung Public Pier and Seafood Street have outdoor areas that allow dogs. You’ll often even see dogs sitting on a seat or in dog strollers right beside the table like they’re a part of the family (since they are, after all!). The restaurants at Ham Tin Wan beach are also dog-friendly. Check out my Sai Kung guide for a detailed guide on all of these places.
